BatteryBar

Came across a nifty application for laptops, BatteryBar, which accurately monitors the battery information.

There’s a particular feature “Battery Wear” which is very useful. Though there is no information on how it is calculated, on my relatively new laptop it shows a wear of 0%, which assume is correct.

Go ahead and give it a try, you will not regret it.

Success Tips!

  • It is the bamboo that bends in heavy winds that has another day to live. The trees that don't bend get uprooted.
  • If you want new ideas, you have to push yourself into the periphery.
  • It's a question of taking a lot of small steps: don't try to eat the elephant in one big bite.
  • Any company that cannot imagine the future won't be around to enjoy it.
  • Leaders do not allow themselves to be weighed down by the difficulties of the present but are focused on the possibilities of the future. Instinct, passion, courage and confidence are the precious ingredients of managing differently. A vision of the future is critical to motivate people to become innovative.
  • If you do precisely what you're supposed to do, and you're boxed in, then you're going to do that very well. But if pressed to do things that aren't in your normal job description, the challenge can push you to a new level of achievement.
  • You have to have faith. You cannot lead if you don't believe.
  • Companies that create the future do more than satisfy customers, they constantly amaze them.
  • Business must start with the assumption that consumers don't want to apply the same amount of effort to construct all their experiences. Today, I will take whatever coffee I'm given -- but on another occasion, I might be more particular.
  • In an organisation, one unique person makes a difference, but you need teamwork to make it happen.
  • Many companies don't understand yet that outsourcing isn't about exporting jobs. It's about importing innovation.
  • Management is a lot of blocking and tackling.
  • Strategy is about stretching limited resources to fit ambitious aspirations.

Windows 7

It’s been about 6 hours since I started the process of installing Windows 7 Beta on my Dell XPS M1330 laptop. Installation was a breeze and so was the remaining configuration. Apart from the classic look & feel, am completely hooked onto the new taskbar. It’s absolutely amazing. Windows Search is lightning. Since am a ardent user of free softwares, in the process of installing everything again since I took a call of doing a complete fresh install instead of upgrading from Vista. My installation steps

1. Backup of the entire laptop using DriveImage XML onto an external USB drive

2. Download Windows 7 Beta. Ensure that while downloading PC does not sleep or go into a standby and then resume the download. It happened with me and when I tried to install, I got the error

STOP: c0000221 Unknown hard error

\systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll

Downloaded the whole setup again this time it went ahead.

3. Scrapped all the partitions and started afresh and installation completed.

4. My laptop give a blue dump after submitting the user account creation in the initial setup. When I restarted, it again came back to the same setup screen but the earlier account was already created so had to create a new account.

5. All set to go!

6. Installed DriveImage XML

7. Restoring all my old data.

Have installed this on my primary laptop (which is against the MS recommendations btw). For all those who are eager to try the new OS, will recommend to feel the experience first hand. It’s awsome.

Will keep posting if I come across anything in Windows 7 over here. Happy installing & all the best, for all those who are trying out the new OS!

You Can See The Future

You can see the future with a vision.

Study your present situation thoroughly. Go over in your imagination the various courses of action possible to you. Visualize the consequences which can follow from each course. Pick out the course which gives you the most promise and go ahead.

Many successful people use this skill of mental visualization. They mentally run through important events before they happen. Picture yourself in your minds eye as already having achieved your goal. See yourself doing the things you'll be doing when you've reached your goal.

You can put your subconscious to work toward making your mental pictures come true. Go over your day in your imagination before you begin it. You can begin acting successfully at any moment.

See the things you want as already yours. Think of them as yours, as already in your possession. What you can see in your mind, you can get.

Free E-Books

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein

1. Until next Thursday (15th January 2009), you can download the PDF version of Suze Orman’s 2009 Action Plan from Oprah’s website for free.

From Amazon:

If in late 2007 you were told that over the next twelve months housing would crater to 20% below it's all-time peak, unemployment would rise from below 5% to nearly 8%, stocks would fall nearly 50%, and a gallon of gas would spike to more than $4 (and then drop below $2) you would probably have shrugged it off as just a whole lot of doomsday-scenario crankiness. But that's exactly what we all had to live through and continue to grapple with in 2009.

My 2009 Action Plan is designed to make sure you are ready for the unexpected—this year and every year forward. I most certainly hope things get better for us all, but in the meantime I want to make sure you have a plan in place that will protect you no matter what “what ifs” lay ahead.

2. A free download is also available of Leo Babauta’s Thriving on Less: Simplifying in a Tough Economy (pdf format)

From the introduction:

The recent economic recession has a lot of people worried, about their jobs, their businesses, their homes and their bills. When your income is dropping or in jeopardy and you still have a mountain of bills to pay, things can get pretty scary.

However, tough economic times do not have to be a time of struggles! If you look for the opportunity in the middle of difficulty, as Mr. Einstein suggested, then tough economic times become an opportunity to transform your life.

Economy & Stock Market …. now

Be fearful when others are greedy and Be greedy when others are fearful” - Warren Buffet

This is easier said than done but is the perfect quote in today’s financial turmoil. It’s been almost a year now since the Indian Stock Market dropped about 60% from it’s peak. While it is impossible to time the market, try to invest a % of income every month now (provided you have not exhausted everything yet!). Valuations are much much cheaper.

The global economic crisis has had an impact on the Indian economy but the growth story is still intact, though not at the same pace. No economy or industry can remain isolated because one cannot self sustain but the impact can vary. Take for example the general insurance industry. Now how would the crisis impact the industry because everybody needs insurance and the demand will never go down. As mentioned above, the economic crisis is a vicious circle between the industries. Auto industry has recorded negative growth, nobody is buying new cars as a result dip in the new vehicle premium and 100% renewal retention is still a distant dream for every company. Similar situation is there for Projects, Marine & other product insurance as well and as a result the general insurance industry also slows down.

Closing this post by giving the two golden rules of investments

Rule #1: Do not lose money; and

Rule #2: Always remember the rule #1.

Happy investing :)

Upload / Download Speed

Recently came across this website which can test your actual Internet speed.

According to the website, it measures your current Internet speed to the nearest server (almost 50.000 server worldwide). The site also tests your download (speed with which you receive data from internet), upload (speed with which you send data to the internet), connection test (maximal number of connections per minute) as well as ping (response time between your computer and the internet)

Below is the result of my connection!
